What will happen during my first office visit?
Each physician practice has its own protocol, but typically on your first visit, you will undergo a comprehensive cardiovascular history and physical, followed by a consultation with your physician. On the day of your first visit, make sure you either bring a list of all your medications including any vitamins, herbal supplements, etc. or the actual medication bottles. Many specialists’ offices have paperwork that can be completed prior to your appointment. You may want to find out in advance of your visit if this paperwork can be sent to you or completed online. If you have questions you would like to ask the physician, write those down and bring them with you to the first appointment. What types of tests should I expect?
Your physician will determine which diagnostic tests you should undergo based on your specific health condition and will provide you with detailed information about your scheduled cardiovascular testing procedure. What happens if the doctor wants me to be seen by another doctor?
VHVI physicians work collaboratively with referring doctors to ensure that you will receive the highest quality of cardiovascular care available. How can I get a second opinion?
To find a cardiovascular physician or to be referred for a respected second opinion, call VHVI at 540.741.2172. How can I learn more about my condition?
Once you have spoken to your physician, ask if there are additional resources available regarding your particular health condition. For example, your physician may have brochures, DVD’s or other materials available for patients to use as a resource. How can I learn more about medications the doctor might prescribe? Before leaving the physician’s office, ask if there are any common side effects that you need to be aware of before taking your prescribed medication. If there is anything that you do not understand, please ask your physician before leaving the office. When can I expect my lab results and how will I know what they mean?
VHVI physicians want to provide you with your lab and test results as soon as possible. Before leaving the physician’s office, ask the physician when you can expect the results. In most instances, you will need to make a follow-up appointment with your physician so your test results can be reviewed with you personally. Please check with the physician’s office prior to your leaving to find out their policy on releasing lab results. It is possible that your VHVI physician will be sending the lab results directly to your primary care physician. How can I find out more about clinical trials and whether one is right for me?
If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, you can call our Cardiac Research Department. Every clinical trial has specific guidelines as to who can qualify and participate. To inquire about clinical trials at the Virginia Heart & Vascular Institute, call 540.741.4657. |
